The ozone therapy as help for fibromyalgic patients
/The ozone has got many characteristics and beneficial effects and for this reason it is also used in medicine. During the First World War the Austrians used the ozone contained in bags, wrapping them around the legs of wounded soldiers in order to avoid their gangrene.
As it is possible to modulate the percentage of oxygen concentration and also the different ways of administration, the ozone characteristics are various: antibacterial and antiviral action, enhancement of circulation and metabolism, antitoxic, anti-inflammatory, analgesic and cicatrizant action. This therapy has got different forms of administration through an intramuscular, intra-articular, subcutaneous and insufflation injection and systemic therapy.
The ozone therapy is used to treat many pathologies. Which ones? We asked to MD Alessandro Di Matteo, physiatrician of the Clinica San Francesco.
“This therapy treats osteoarticular inflammatory conditions, disc herniations, lumbosciatics, vertebral stenosis, periarthritis, epicondylitis and epitrochleitis, tendinitises, trochanteritis, gonarthritis and chondropathies, carpal tunnel syndrome, tarsal tunnel syndrome and Morton’s neuroma syndrome. These are just some orthopaedic pathologies, but other medicine fields exist using the ozone therapy. For some time we are trying to use it on fibromyalgic patients with very interesting outcomes”.
The fibromyalgia is a syndrome typified by diffused chronic pain. The causes are not known so solving therapies and healing ways do not exist. The patients affected by this syndrome find themselves in a spiral without exit between chronic pain and the frustration at not being able to solve this trouble.
How is the ozone therapy used for the fibromyalgic syndrome?
“We have tested the ozone therapy on some fibromyalgic patients. The administration of the oxygen-ozone mixture occurs through systemic way. After a blood sampling, we add oxygen with ozone to the sampled blood. This increases the oxygen in red blood cells being able to permeate inside capillaries, even those more marginal, causing an analgesic and anti-inflammatory effect. It is often difficult to identify the symptoms of this syndrome and in many cases we follow a process of elimination”.
Today a therapy for the fibromyalgia doesn’t exist and we don’t know the reason, but the massive usage of analgesic drugs could help them to feel better?
“As physician I don’t support the chronic use of drugs, but I am aware that for fibromyalgic patients their life is not really easy. However I’m sure that, on the basis of fibromyalgic patients’ experience, the ozone therapy combined with a monitored drugs use, can turn out to be a right compromise to give back an almost normal lifestyle to patient. Furthermore the activities helping to alleviate the symptoms exist, namely physical activities which allow the body to discharge anxiety, frustration and one of these certainly is Tai Chi. Indeed the science proves that this discipline can help a lot the fibromyalgic patients.”
