Clinica San Francesco cutting-edge in implantation of prostheses for rhizarthrosis treatment

Not only innovation, Clinica San Francesco and its Hand and Elbow Surgery team continue to teach through training activity in operating room.
Drs Alberto Donadelli, Enrico Carità and Mara Laterza are nationally recognized as trainers for implants of rhizoarthrosis prostheses. This represents an element of particular specialization for the Clinic.
The Clinic Hand and Elbow Surgery staff was the first in Italy to use this prosthesis and has considerable experience.
In the last few days the team of surgeons hosted, in operating room, Drs Luca Donnini, Matteo Ferrero and Emiliano Longo, hand surgeons who attended the implantation of this state of the art trapeziometacarpal prostheses.
The three guests surgeons had also the possibility to experience first-hand the implantation of trapeziometacarpal prosthesis during the CadLab day at the ICLO in Verona, Italy.
The implant of trapeziometacarpal prosthesis is a treatment to face the most advanced stages of rhizoarthrosis and more complex functional needs.
The rhizoarthrosis is a degenerative disease that affects the hand trapeziometacarpal joint, due to wear of cartilage. The onset of arthrosis leads to the alteration of hand morphology, reduction of movement, grip and forceps force and onset of pain that may occur in very simple daily movements, and, in advanced stages, even at rest.
The trapeziometacarpal prostheses have the great benefit to have an immediate stability that allow the patient an immediate recovery of mobility and thumb strenght, minimizing physiotherapy and functional recovery time, and so an immediate return to daily and working activities.
