Clinica San Francesco reaches 5000 robotic surgeries

This is the first health facility outside USA to achieve this goal

Clinica San Francesco, GHC group, achieves an historic goal in robotic orthopaedic surgery.

On Monday 16th January 2023 Dr Piergiuseppe Perazzini, director of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Functional Unit, and his team carried out the robotic replacement with Mako system number 5000.

This is a goal never achieved by any health facility outside USA that rewards the long journey begun 12 years ago (exactly on 27th January 2011) by Dr Perazzini with the first robotic knee replacements in Europe, followed  in 2012 by the total hip ones and later in 2017 by the total knee ones (first in Italy). An exciting experience by the surgeon from Verona, real forerunner in this field, that allowed to obtain remarkable outcomes for patients and continue an improving process of procedure leading the Clinic to become a national and international reference centre for this surgical technology as well as teaching school for this.

The experience gained by Dr Perazzini and his team places the Clinic among the world leaders for the number of robotic prosthetic implants performed and cutting-edge facility in use of innovative technology.

Since 2013 the Clinic is CORE (Centro di Ortopedia Robotica Europeo – European Robotic Orthopaedic Centre), since 2019 “Reference centre for robotic orthopaedic surgery” of Veneto Region and since 2021 reference centre for the Italian Hand Surgery Society (SICM).

The Clinica San Francesco’s 2022 closed with an important prestigious event, confirming its vocation of national and international reference centre for robotic orthopaedic surgery.

On Tuesday 13rd December 2022 Dr Piergiuseppe Perazzini, director of Orthopaedic and Traumatology Functional Unit, attended as lecturer and moderator the international Webinar organized by the Arthroschool of Istanbul – directed by Professor Ibrahim Tuncay of Bezmialem Vakif University – entitled “Robot, navigation, PSI (patient-specific instruments) or surgeon?”, event that brought together leading global experts.

Perazzini’s report, entitled “Makoplasty tricks of DAA THA”, focused on tricks used in robotic hip replacements (THA – Total Hip Arthroplasty) performed by the Mako system with DAA (Direct Anterior Approach), of which Dr Perazzini was forerunner at European level (and not only). In detail, this procedure is one the minimally invasive ones used in total hip replacements and may be associated with a reduction in damage and muscle pain and faster postoperative rehabilitation.

The traditional hip replacement procedures involve the side or back of hip with the risk of causing a significant joint and associated tissue disorder with an incision 20-30 centimeters long. The Direct Anterior Approach instead requires an incision 7-10 centimeters long in the front of hip.

The robotic surgery activity of Dr Perazzini and his team begins in 2011 (after many training trips in the USA) with the first robotic partial knee replacement performed outside US territory, followed in 2012 by the first robotic total hip replacement (always outside USA) and in 2017 by the robotic total knee replacement (first in Italy).
